Exchanging to an Alberta licence
You can exchange your licence for an Alberta licence if you have a licence from:
- Any Canadian province
- The United States
- Austria
- Germany
- Japan
- Korea
- Switzerland
Note: If you are suspended in any other jurisdiction, you CANNOT obtain an Alberta licence until the suspension is cleared up in the other province.
If you are from any other country except the above mentioned, you will need to go through the entire testing process.
In all cases, you will need to provide:
- Proof of Canadian status
- Canadian birth certificate / passport or
- Passport with record of landing or
- Passport with employment/student authorization (valid for at least 3 months)
- Proof of Alberta residency
- Bills, paystubs, mailed bank statements, and letters from the government, with an Alberta address
You MUST surrender your other licence. The cost is $74.95.
Drivers Abstracts
To obtain your Alberta drivers abstract, you must fax us a letter authorizing someone to pick up your drivers abstract on your behalf. (Please include your AB drivers licence number in the letter). The person picking up your abstract must show their drivers licence and pay a cost of $21.50 to get the record for the previous 3 years. If you have any special instructions, please include it in your letter.
Motor vehicles does NOT require your drivers abstract when obtaining an Alberta licence. HOWEVER, your insurance company may require this, so please check with them before moving here, to save yourself time and money. We are able to obtain drivers abstracts on your behalf from:

Registering an out of province vehicle in Alberta
- Bring in the serial number of the vehicle and purchase an out of province inspection form for $9.45
- Take the vehicle to a mechanic licenced to perform out of province inspections
- Obtain Alberta liability insurance for the vehicle
- Bring in:
- Proof of ownership (bill of sale or previous registration)
- Alberta liability insurance
- Drivers Licence
- Out of province inspection form (green form with barcode in top right hand corner) dated less than 14 days ago
- Cost of normal registration + $7.35 close out fee
Note: If the vehicle is from outside of Canada, import forms must also be provided.

If the event occured in another province, you must contact that province in order to obtain the certificate. Forms are available through us for a cost of $2.10.
