VEHICLE REGISTRATION
Documents needed to register a vehicle
- bill of sale / lease agreement / proof of ownership (i.e. previous registration)
- valid insurance for the new vehicle
- drivers licence (or 2 pieces of ID)
If the vehicle has never been registered before, get from the dealer BEFORE registering the vehicle a
- NVIS (New Vehicle Information Sheet)
If the vehicle is from out of province, you need
- an out of province inspection
- Bring the VIN number of the vehicle to a registry office.
- The registry office will issue you a request for inspection as well as a list of mechanics on request. The cost for this is $10.50.
- Take the request for inspection to a certified mechanic and have him/her fill out an inspection form.
- Bring the inspection form back to a registry office within 14 days of having it filled out. If it is longer than 14 days a new inspection will have to be filled out.
- for vehicles from outside of Canada, you also need import forms from Canada Customs

If you do not have existing plates in your name, or need new plates, you need to bring in:

Transferring Plates
Plates can be transferred from one vehicle to another, as long as its for the same person.
- bill of sale / lease agreement / proof of ownership (i.e. previous registration)
- valid insurance for the new vehicle
- drivers licence (or 2 pieces of ID)
The person named on all three documents and the plates MUST be the same. If a second person is named on the bill of sale, but not on the plate, the second person needs to sell sign over a bill of sale to the other owner in order to use the same plate. Otherwise, a new plate will need to be bought and BOTH parties must be present with their driver's licence. The cost of transferring plates is $22.45.
Note: You can renew your plates at the same time for $70.45 and save the transfer fee. Please tell the clerk if you want to do this BEFORE they start the service.

DRIVER'S LICENCES
Change of Address
This must be done in person, at a cost of $22.45. Because of changes made July 1, 2002 we are no longer able to print address change labels. Your registration will be mailed to you free of charge, or if you wanted it reprinted immediately, there will be an additional charge of $9.45 for each registration printed.

Renewing Driver's Licence
This is done every 5 years, and MUST be done in person (except in special circumstances). The cost is $64.45, and the licence is good for another 5 years.

Renewing Professional Driver's Licence
Class 1, 2 & 4
A medical MUST be given at the time of renewal. This is done every 5 years for those under 45 years of age, and every 2 years thereafter. Cost:

Acceptable Identification
When you apply for your drivers licence or identification card, your registry agent must verify your identity through stricter identity confirmation.
A registry agent will require information to satisfy the following three categories:
- Who you are
- Photo documents that must contain your legal name and date of birth (DOB). Some examples of primary photo identification are (this is not an all inclusive list):
- Alberta operator's licence or identification card
- Photo driver's licence (from another jurisdiction)
- Images on the Motor Vehicles System (MOVES)
- Photo identification card issued by another Motor Vehicle jurisdiction or government issued photo identification
- Citizenship, Immigration, Naturalization, or Permanent Resident Card
- Canadian Armed Forces Identification Card
- Passport
- Municipal, Provincial or Federal Police Force Identification
- Photo documents that must contain your legal name and date of birth (DOB). Some examples of primary photo identification are (this is not an all inclusive list):

- Support documents that contain two data elements such as name, DOB, signature, address, etc. Some examples of original support documents (certified documents are acceptable) are:
- Birth or Marriage Certificate
- Credit, Debit or Account Card (must contain your name and signature)
- Municipal, Territorial, Provincial, Federal Government Employee Card
- Chequing or saving account statements
- Cancelled cheque with imprinted name and address
- Utility, telephone, gas or cable TV bill in applicant's name
- Property tax bill or receipt, land title or mortgage documents
- Income tax receipts
- Insurance documents (life, auto, residential, etc.)
- Support documents that contain two data elements such as name, DOB, signature, address, etc. Some examples of original support documents (certified documents are acceptable) are:

All documents presented must be originals or certified copies. Photocopies will NOT be accepted.
Please Note: Falsifying information when applying for a driver's licence or identification card is a criminal offence.

Photo Identification
We issue photo identification for Alberta residents who do not have a drivers licence and are at least 14 years old. If you are under 18 a parent must be present. The cost is $39.45, and you must provide 3 pieces of acceptable identification

Getting a Class 7 (learner's licence)
- Be at least 14 years old
- Obtain a manual, and study it - free
- Have your parent accompany you if you are a minor
- Bring 3 pieces of acceptable identification
- Take a knowledge test - $17.60 => Taken on computer, 30 multiple choice questions, must obtain at least 25 out of 30 to pass (84%). Note: If you fail, you must wait 24 hours before trying again. (ie. The next day)
- Once you pass, you must also pass an eye exam
- Get your driver's licence (class 7) - $64.45
Class 7 Conditions
- Must hold a Learner's Licence (Class 7) for at least 1 year
- Must be accompanied by a fully licenced (non-GDL probationary) driver who is 18 years of age or older and who is seated next to the driver
- Not permitted to drive from midnight to 5 a.m.
- No more passengers than seat belts
- Fewer demerit points are allowed than for fully licenced drivers
- Have a zero alcohol level
- Must at least 16 years of age.
- Obtain a Class 7 (learner's Licence)
- Go for a road test - $73.25
- Once you pass, exchange the class 7 for a class 5 - $22.45 => The renewal date of the licence will NOT change.
At this point you will be considered a Probationary Driver under the Graduated Driver's Licence Program (GDL).
Probationary Driver Conditions
- Must spend a minimum of 2 years as a Probationary Driver
- No more passengers than seat belts
- Fewer demerit points are allowed than for fully licenced drivers
- Have a zero alcohol level
- No upgrading to a commercial licence
- Cannot serve as an accompanying driver to a Learner
To become a fully licenced driver (Class 5) you must:
- Have been suspension free for the last year of the 2-year Probationary Stage
- Pass an advanced road test, $115.25

Getting a Class 6 (motorcycle licence)
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Obtain at least a class 7 (or higher)
- Take a knowledge test - $17.60 => Taken on computer, 30 multiple choice questions (Passing grade = 25 out of 30 (84%))
- Once you pass, take a road test - $73.25
- Once you pass, exchange licence - $22.45
Please Note: If you apply for a Motorcycle Licence (Class 6) after your Learner's Licence (Class 7), you will be subject to the conditions of the Graduated Driver Licensing program.

- For class 1, you must take an airbrakes course

Change of Name
To change the name on the drivers licence, you will need to bring in one of the following
- Legal Name Change Certificate
- Marriage Certificate (for females only)
- Passport
- Canadian Citizenship
- Birth Certificate
